2009 Marilla Cyclocross Race

Gools, Goblins and Bicycle Racers?? That was the scene this past weekend at the 2009 Marilla Cyclocross race that took place at Marilla Park in Saberton. Bicycle racers from across the state came to Saberton on Halloween to take to the fun yet challenging race course that the WVMBA laid out for the weekend. For those who aren’t familiar with the sport of cyclocross, it is a 45 min – 60 min (depending on rider classification) race around about a 1.5-2mile race course. Riders are challenged to ride at high paces up and down hills, through deep gravel pits and even forced to jump over manmade wooden barricades that are set up along the race course. The race day started off with great race conditions but just as the first moto was about to finish up it started misting a little but…Then the sky’s opened up and down came the rain making the final two races of the day some of the muddiest racing action in the state’s history of cyclocross. I actually did the race myself and by the end of the very first lap I had accumulated so much mud and grass build up in my gears that I could hardly shift. Thankfully no one was injured and a good time was had by all. Besides….who doesn’t love playing in the mud!! For now I guess all we can do is pray for better conditions next round on November 14th in Davis, WV
